Rapolano Terme (Siena), June 15, 2019: Officially the twenty-ninth edition of the Gold Drop Award, it has been dedicated to solidarity with nature and the environment.
This year, Green Accord received the Gold Drop Award titled, “The Earth is Our Home”, for nearly twenty years of work in raising awareness on environmental themes and scenarios. To receive the award, the President of Green accord, Alfonoso Cauteruccio, together with the documentary filmmaker Davide Demichelis and the Cameroonian journalist Jean Claude Mbede of the Greenaccord international network. Monsignor Maurizio Gronchi, Professor at the Pontifical Urban University presented the prize.
In addition to Greenaccord, the “Drop” was awarded to the Environmental and Agricultural Protection Unit of the Military Police and the ISDE (International Society of Doctors for the Environment). Furthermore, since last year, “The Smile of the Heart” award has been instituted in memory of Fabrizio Frizzi, the 2005 recipient of the Drop of Gold award, and which is given to someone in the television or entertainment world. This year’s winner is Domenico Iannacone, creator and host of the television broadcast, “The Ten Commandments”, which aired live on the Italian television channel, Rai 3. Among the significant presences of this year’s edition, also the journalist of Vatican Radio’s Portuguese section, and official of the General Secretariat of the Synod, Cristiane Murray. Murray brought a contribution to the Amazon in view of the Special Synod of Bishops convened by the Pope for next autumn and dedicated to the planet’s “green lung” problem. To lead the ceremony, Robert Amen, deputy director of RAI, together with Paolo Bernardi of the regional press of RAI and Giuseppe Carrisi, director, writer and journalist of the Giornale Radio Rai.
It should be noted that the city of Rapolano Terme hosted the first two editions of the International Forum of Information for the Protection of Nature, held by Greenaccord at the Museum of the Ancient Grancia under the High Patronage of the President of the Republic. The first edition held in October 2003 was attended by Rajendra Pachauri, Indian scientist, economist and former president of the UN IPCC and Nobel Peace Prize; and the writer and journalist, Luis Sepúlveda. In the second edition in 2004, speakers included Jonathon Lash, former President of the World Resources Institute; Lester Brown, founder and former President of the Earth Policy Institute (USA) and economist and philosopher, Serge Latouche.
Since 2003, Greenaccord’s mission has been to promote the training of journalists on environmental issues through dialogue and professional support between communication professionals and scientists in order to improve their skills. Also in the Tuscany region, from the 7th to the 9th of March, 2019 in San Miniato, was the fifteenth edition of the International Forum of Information with the theme, “The Breath of Earth: The Forests”.
