On
the second day of the G8 Environment, there is a big expectation on
the results of scientific studies and research projects on
biodiversity and climate.
G8
on the way to Copenhagen, and Italy builds alliances with the South
of the world
Italy
and South Africa sign an accord on know-how and technologies for
fighting carbon
dioxide emissions
The second day of the G8
Environment is been characterized by an expectation on the decisions
made by the participating countries on big issues as threat to
biodiversity and climate change. Environment Ministry Director
General, Corrado Clini, is the first one to speak:”The issues , the
same that defined the Chart of Siracusa, cannot be run out on the G8
discussion table. A course begins in which it has been highlight the
priority of these issues and in which we look for strategies and
project lines.”
Meanwhile, important taking offices comes
out from yesterday working session, as the one from Connie Hedegaard,
Danish Environment Minister, that remarks:”The currently G8
Environment is a step forward compared to previous meeting. I hope
that from here will come a strong message to the next global meeting”
In the mean time, there is a forward-looking, thinking about the UN
Conference in Cophenagen “Time pass by, deadlines are imminent.
Perhaps, what we need is that, from now, countries participate with a
further financial contribution: it has been easy to come to an
agreement on a long term , but now the scientific community invoke
actions for short term goals”. What’s the solution? “The economic
and climate crisis must not collide. The developing countries must be
supported by research and developing projects that envisage, for
example, capital investments in public research”.
In the
main time, yesterday Italy and South Africa signed the agreement, to
commit their two countries to coâ€operate in various activities that
will help protect the environment and fight climate change. The
agreement is a further step on the road to coâ€operation that the
two countries began at the Poznan
conference
on climate change last December and it will facilitate the
development of common projects
with
the goal of reducing carbon dioxide emissions, increasing the use of
renewable energy, improving
energy
efficiency as well as developing bioenergy, ecobuilding, sustainable
transport and ecotourism.“Soon know-how and technologies that we
already got will reach South Africa”, Prestigiacomo said.
The
hope is that now Italy will provide itself with coherent energetic
strategies and, trough renewing the nets that are currently not able
to absorbe the quick growth of new renewable energy, give stability
and assurance to the youth market of the renewable energies that,
thank to the thrust of the energetic incentive scheme, has seen, in
the last year, the recovering by photovoltaic of important market
positions. Lastly, in order to recover the economy, Italy, as
regarding the urban planning for transport, needs to privilege and
invest in the maritime transport that needs only 1/5 of the energy
respect to the road transport.
In
the evening, Lisa Jackson, Administrator of the U.S. Environmental
Protection Agency, issued the first official statements “I bring
from President Obama a message of hope, change and common purpose.
The goal for the U.S. Government is clean energy and energy
efficiency”. On the other side, she issued provisional statements
on climate deadlines “We do not have any news – Jackson said –
everybody needs to do his share”. A passage that will make us
reflect is the one on the nuclear issue “According to President
Obama, on this issue there are still open questions, among which the
problem of wastes is the most important one and not yet worked out.
Nuclear could be part of the ecological development but these issues
are still to be coped with”.
Even Stavros Dimas, European
Commissioner for the Environment, chime in on Obama’s role: “It is
a big shift respect to the previous position. The presence of Lisa
Jackson is a clear evidence of this shift. I think that the U.S.
Congress has the intention of approving the cap and trade system. The
hope is that is going to happen before Copenhagen metting”. Dimas
termina ends with an estimation : “Trough the collaboration of
companies it is possible to introduce low carbon technologies. And
the climate and energy packet could be a propulsion toward a ’Green
New Deal”’”.
On the closing day, there is a big
expectation on the results of current works on issues as threat to
biodiversity and climate change. A first assesment of this siracusan
G8 is at the door.
