Vatican: 300 megawatt-hours of clean energy a year thanks to

2,400 photovoltaic panels installed on the roof of the Aula Nervi

Immediately after its inauguration, the new photovoltaic system built on the roof of the Aula Paul VI was presented to the more than 80 journalists that had come from all over the world for the 6th International Forum of Information for the Safeguarding of Nature organized by Greenaccord.

An important signal of the sensitivity of the Vatican regarding the safeguarding of creation, emphasized numerous times in important addresses by Benedict XVI, the system is part of active attention to the future of our planet, explained Pier Carlo Cuscianna, Director of Technical Services for the Vatican, and Mauro Villarini, who coordinated the project.

The hall, which was the idea of Paul VI for the reception of pilgrims, was built following the design of architect Pier Luigi Nervi and inaugurated in 1971.

The “Nervi Hall,” which can hold 17,000 standing guests and up to 8,000 seated, had a unique roof, made of 4,800 small concrete panels positioned to reduce overheating and guarantee shade in the summer.

Now these concrete panels have been substituted by 2.400 photovoltaic panels and another 2,400 reflector panels which, in addition to shading the hall, provide energy for lighting, heating, and air conditioning.

The project was presented during Greenaccord’s 5th International Forum last year.  The construction started officially in September and was finished in little more than two and  a half months.

The new system, which occupies a surface area of 5,000 square meters, produces 300 megawatt-hours of clean energy for the reception hall and the nearby buildings.

The system, planned and donated to the Vatican by the German company SolarWorld, will allow a annual reduction of 22 tons of CO2, equivalent to conserving over 80 tons of petroleum.
